Umayarou, Kyoto, Japan: Horse meat izakaya

Horse bastard! That’s what Umayarou(馬野郎) means in Japanese. The name screams everything about what Umayarou has to neigh: horse meat! They don’t serve human bastards’ meat just yet.

Umayarou is a budget-friendly, down-to-earth Japanese izakaya. A Japanese restaurant for Japanese customers. That’s what it is. Not that it means xenophobia. Umayarou’s menu covers Japanese comfort food and many parts of horse meat. Some pages of the menu look like a catalog at a butcher or a menu at a steakhouse.

Horse neck.

Horse neck came in the shape of butter: sliced, not liquified, which sounded promising. Here, the horse neck was called Tategami(たてがみ) which means “mane” in Japanese. The horse neck was neither hairy nor meaty. It was more like “horse fat.” Thus, the butter.

Fried horse meat.

Interestingly buttery was Fried horse meat. The meat was so chewy that I almost thought a bastard picked the wrong beef to cook. But it’s Umayarou, not my house. In fact, I liked it here.

Horse steak.

Even better was Horse steak. “I finally got beef!” was what I could say. Instead, I stayed humble. No one wants to have beef with a horse at Umayarou. After all, this bastard was winning.
