ha ra, Kyoto: Au naturel cafe by Kamo River

ha ra is famous for two things. One is that the cafe is operated by an ex-manager of Kyoto’s legendary cafe efish which was produced by Japanese product designer Shin Nishibori who used to work for Apple. The other is that ha ra is sophisticated. ha ra’s primitive and elegant, au naturel vibe is in harmony with their neighborhood where Kyoto’s iconic Kamo River runs.

ha ra’s focus is on sandwiches. Their “BLT sandwich” was clean, thus Japanese. It was the least messy BLT I’ve ever had. Their light homemade mayo was just right. I also had a hotdog named “Sausage Bucket sandwich” that had caponata (Italian eggplant tomato sauce), chili, cheese, and coriander. It was quite a fusion hot dog and delicious.

BLT sandwich. 968 yen / $7.40.

Sausage Bucket sandwich. 1100 yen / $8.40.

French fries. 660 yen / $5.

7/10
