Japan Oni Exchange Museum, Fukuchiyama, Kyoto

As Japan’s Demon Slayer (鬼滅の刃) movie broke box office records during the COVID-19 pandemic, the demon “oni (鬼)” is absolutely popular in Japan. One of the legends about oni originated in Mt. Oe in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto where the Japan Oni Exchange Museum (日本の鬼の交流博物館 / Japanese Oni Exchange Museum / Japan Oni Cultural Museum) is located.

Driving past the quirky roadside art of oni in the mountain is an educational, modern facility of the Japan Oni Exchange Museum which came to me as a surprise. The permanent exhibition (330 yen / $2 for adults) displays domestic/international oni items, the legend about the local oni of Mt. Oe in Fukuchiyama, and miscellaneous oni art.
