Brooklyn Night Bazaar, Kyoto, Japan: “Not in Kyoto anymore,” said my inner Dorothy

Unlike Japanese traditional “snack bars,” Brooklyn Night Bazaar is an obviously-nonconventional, sleek, and contemporary bar with a soul of Japanese perfection.

Brooklyn Night Bazaar. Yes, it says “Brooklyn” which I assume is not Brooklyn in Mississippi or Brooklyn in Oregon, but Brooklyn in New York. Brooklyn Night Bazaar calls itself “sound bar” and is focused on (primarily) hip-hop music and those who love and cultivate the culture around it. Brooklyn Night Bazaar seems to function as a cool hub for urban contemporary music lovers.

Obviously available for groups.

Beyond the futuristic metallic tunnel at the entrance appeared the surprisingly clean, sleek, and spacious lounge (for a Japanese bar). I immediately realized that this was not the type of bar I go to because A: Japanese bars are often in the style of “snack bar” which is a tiny wraparound bar with a bartender/owner behind its bar counter, and B: The music and customers at my type of bar often prefer Madonna, Cher, and Lady Gaga in the queerest way possible. “I had a feeling I was not in Kyoto anymore,” said my inner Dorothy.

A menu: some are drink names, some are liquor brands.

The selection of beverages on the menu seemed to appeal to people from all walks/colors/fluids+ of life. It covered from a snack/dive bar classic Kyogetsu Acerola to Kyoto’s contemporary craft gin Kinobi. A bartender was a master of communication and had nary a trouble deftly concocting cocktails with well-selected handsome glasses meanwhile.

Soon-to-be-cocktails handsome glasses.

My gin and tonic.

A popcorn was surprisingly savory. Sheer bonus.

¥800/$6.20 for a railway drink is not the cheapest in Japan. But given the beautiful presentation, the professional service, and the view of the river, the price at Brooklyn Night Bazaar seems reasonable. Music events on weekends at Brooklyn Night Bazaar would be even greater.
