Tacofini, Osaka: Mexican Japanese taco stand izakaya

Tacofini (タコフィニ / Tacos Del Infinito) offers authentic tacos and classic izakaya repertoire with a Mexican twist. It’s the only Jexican taco stand izakaya in Osaka.

Tacofini’s green wall and red lantern caught my eye. Two reasons: A; It’s unusual not to look like Christmas with those colors, and B; The red lantern says “Tacofini (タコフィニ)” which I never heard of. It was something.

A shop sign says “tacos (たこす)” mocking a retro enamel sign for a Japanese tobacco (たばこ) shop.

Tacofini has a Japanese izakaya vibe. But their interior designs (Mexican flag-like color palettes, pods of tall indoor cacti, and an indoor taco stand) speak their Mexican identity. Tacofini looks like the perfect amalgamation of a Mexican taco stand and a Japanese izakaya.

An order slip for tacos.

Menus at Tacofini show a well-curated list of Japanese comfort food with a Mexican twist. For tacos, there are order slips at each table for customers to check the box of tacos to order. I appreciated their options of herbs: green onions, cilantro, and oba/shiso.

A spit-roast of tacos al pastor.

Inside the indoor taco stand was a spit roast for tacos al pastor that is considered a Lebanese Mexican dish. My Japanese dinner companion said, “Is it Turkish?” She ate it and said, “muy bien” in Japanese.

A seemingly Japanese, retro woman savors a taco. Above the woman says “Tacofini (タコフィニ).”
