In Uji (宇治), the mecca for Japanese green tea ‘Uji tea (宇治茶)’, tea shops and cafes are everywhere. Now, an Indian tea stall, Kolkata-style chai stall, is about to be locals’ cup of tea.

Located at a local shopping street ‘Ujibashidori Shotengai (宇治橋通商店街)’ is a hip and rustic tea stall ‘Watte Chai (ワッテチャイ)’ specialized for Indian chai.

Snacks are also on sale.

Watte Chai’s chai in a disposable clay cup.
Watte Chai’s chai is served with their handmade, disposable clay cups. Grab a cup of super rich chai for just 400 yen ($3), bottoms up, and throw it away (into a designated pot, not onto a street, because it’s Kyoto). This whole experience is Watte Chai (“break it, chai” in Japanese).

Gracefully disposed clay cups.
